2026 Hurricane Season Prep: 10 Home Repairs to Do Before June

Don't Wait for a Storm Watch — Prepare Now

Hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30. For South Florida homeowners, preparation isn't optional — it's essential. Here are 10 home repairs and improvements you should complete before hurricane season starts.

1. Inspect and Repair Your Roof

Loose or missing shingles become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Have a professional inspect your roof and fix any vulnerabilities. Pay special attention to flashing around vents and chimneys.

2. Reinforce Your Garage Door

Your garage door is one of the weakest points in your home's structure. A failed garage door can cause catastrophic wind damage to the entire house. Install hurricane-rated bracing or replace with a wind-rated door.

3. Install or Check Impact Windows

Impact windows are your first line of defense. If you have older windows, consider upgrading to HVHZ (High-Velocity Hurricane Zone) rated units. At minimum, ensure your hurricane shutters are functional and you have the hardware to install them.

4. Seal All Exterior Cracks

Small cracks in stucco or around windows become entry points for wind-driven rain. Seal any exterior cracks with elastomeric caulk rated for South Florida's UV exposure.

5. Secure Outdoor Structures

Screen enclosures, pergolas, and fences should be inspected for loose fasteners. Tighten or replace any compromised hardware.

6. Clear Your Gutters and Drains

Clogged gutters cause water to back up under your roof. Clean all gutters, downspouts, and ensure drainage directs water away from your foundation.

7. Trim Trees and Remove Dead Branches

Overhanging branches are the #1 source of storm damage. Remove dead limbs and trim branches within 10 feet of your roof, windows, or power lines.

8. Check Your Drywall for Water Stains

Existing water stains on interior drywall indicate potential leak paths that will worsen during a hurricane. Address the source and repair the drywall before season starts.

9. Test Backup Power

If you have a generator, test it now. Ensure you have fuel and that it's properly maintained. Consider installing a whole-home transfer switch.

10. Document Your Property

Take photos and video of every room, your roof, and your exterior. Store copies digitally and in a waterproof container. This documentation is invaluable for insurance claims.
